Chaplain Care

When our community calls for help, our First Responders put themselves on the line and go into immediate action, never questioning whether or not they should answer the call for assistance. Our first responders deal in traumatic and emotionally exhausting situations on a daily basis and encounter situations most of us would run from but, instead, they run to.

First Responders are the first to run to help others and the last to seek help for themselves.  Due to this trait, it is not surprising that they are at the highest risk for:

  • Suicide
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Substance Abuse
  • Divorce

While it is important to seek help from a counselor specializing in trauma care, there is a growing need for “spiritual/trauma care providers.” Simply being there to listen, even without spiritual input, serves as one of our benefits. Additionally, as chaplains, we are able to provide an arena for confidential/privileged communications in order that they have a safe place to talk without worrying about their jobs.

(CISD) Critical Incident Stress Debriefing

The critical incident stress debriefing (CISD) is designed to mitigate the impact of a psychologically traumatic event (a critical incident) and to assist personnel in recovering as quickly as possible from the stress associated with the event. The CISD is a structured group meeting using a 7 stage intervention process.

Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) is a comprehensive, systematic program for the mitigation of critical-incident related stress. As an organized approach for the reaction, and control of harmful aspects of stress, it can help reduce these effects earlier rather than later.

Critical incident stress management is an adaptive, short-term psychological helping- process that focuses solely on an immediate and identifiable problem. It can include a pre-incident preparedness to acute crisis management to post-crisis follow-up

Both Sr. Chaplains are trained and certified in facilitating a critical incident stress debriefing. It is essential that this program be facilitated correctly in order to not inflict more undo stress, but rather bring about recovery as early as possible.

Pastoral Care

Pastors can easily become overwhelmed in their role as the main spiritual care resource for their church, especially when added to the host of other responsibilities they have. Additionally, it can be difficult for pastors to reach out for help and oftentimes this isn’t done until they are at the complete end of their rope. As ordained ministers and chaplains we can provide that “safe” place for pastors to have as a confidential, non-judgemental resource. A place for them to share their burdens without the concerns of their congregation and other pastors knowing.
Additionally, for smaller churches without a large staff, our chaplains are able to fill the pulpit on a short term or occasional basis to give pastors a respite.
